Part of the Theory of Modeling and Simulation Symposium, SCS SpringSim 2011 Multi-Conference

Synopsis: M&S tools that are compliant with standards play a significant role in developing high quality products and services across many interesting application domains. To have standardized DEVS tools, it is necessary to develop standards that capture the fundamental aspects of modeling and simulation – i.e., syntax and semantics of model specifications and simulation protocols. The standards’ role is to support building standalone DEVS-compliant simulation models and promote interoperability among simulation models. They can also help better use of advanced computing technologies such as software modeling tools and cloud computing platforms.

This workshop is aimed at advancing standardizations for the DEVS model development and simulation experimentations. Given continuing advances and growing user community of DEVS, this standardization effort will benefit the entire M&S profession. Tool developers and simulation professionals can benefit from standards in advancing the application of modeling and simulation. The standardization positively impacts practitioners and developers alike and more broadly all sectors of the M&S community and users. This workshop consists of:

Presentations: Introduces the standardization concepts and development of successful standards at the present time. A state-of-affairs on DEVS standardization activities, tools, and challenges will be included in the presentations. The presentations will be arranged in a single track. A set of invited presentations introducing recent progresses in standardization are selected by the program chairs, and additional presentations and posters are selected by the Program Committee, based on submitted regular or short papers (see Papers section below).

Papers: Regular or short papers on various aspects of standardizations contributing to formulation of standards. Papers are sought on understanding, specifications, and realizations of standardization problems and solutions for single and distributed modeling and simulation platforms. Contributions on other related aspects of standardizations are also encouraged. Papers should be submitted under the DEVS Standardization Workshop. Submit technical articles and experience reports, properly formatted in accordance with these guidelines. For paper preparation guidelines please visit http://www.scs.org/PDFs/formattingkit.pdf. Papers must be submitted as PDF files to http://www.softconf.com/scs/DEVS11/. Accepted papers will be included in the conference proceedings and archived in both the ACM and the European Digital Library.

Model competition: Participants of the workshop are encouraged to submit DEVS models that are developed and validated. These models are important as exemplars for standardization. Simulation model entries should focus on common, exciting, and challenging application domains or otherwise capture fundamentals of DEVS modeling formalisms along with their variants and extensions. Models can encompass Parallel DEVS, Cellular DEVS, DEVS Agent, Hybrid DEVS, and Variable/Dynamic Structure DEVS among others. Every entry needs to provide the following items in order to replicate the example results.

·         Required

o    A conceptual description of the system being modeled

o    Complete source code for the models

o    Items such as third-party software or executables that are required for successful execution of the simulation model

o    Information about simulation and modeling tools used or otherwise an executable that can be used with the source code to run simulations

o    Sample simulation results

o    Developer names and a Readme file

·         Desired

o    Source code documentation

o    Model specifications

Entries need to be deposited into Source Forge (http://devsstandard.sourceforge.net). The simulation models are encouraged to be presented as posters. Entries will be judged at the workshop with three of them receiving awards in the amount of $500 each with a certificate sponsored by RTSync Corporation.

A special issue on DEVS Standardization will be proposed for the Simulation: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation International journal.
