Mission
The field of modeling and simulation in the recent years has been at a cross road in search of its place within the academic institutions, private and governmental organizations, and industries worldwide. A number of universities or their affiliated Centers have been actively seeking “academic recognition” for Modeling and Simulation (M&S) that is distinct from other disciplines such as engineering and sciences. Similarly, government agencies and industries have been working toward making best use of modeling and simulation practices and technologies to achieve their short- and long-term goals in a disciplined fashion.
Based on the autocatalytic nature of interactions among industry, governments, and academia, it is essential to promote collaboration toward achieving disciplined modeling and simulation with key benefits to researchers, practitioners, and ultimately the consumers. The role of the Education Technical Council, therefore, is envisioned to support educational activities leading to (i) establishment of the M&S Body of Knowledge, (ii) creation of Undergraduate/Graduate Curricula and Programs, (iii) development of the M&S Standardizations, and (iv) expansion of the M&S Certification.
To achieve its objectives, the Education Technical Council activities need to be congruent with other Technical Councils and more broadly with the Conferences, Education, and Publications arms of the SCS. The Council, therefore, should support also the larger SCS strategic goals such as membership and industry/government partnerships. In its capacity, the technical council activities should have a synergistic focus and thus provide an infrastructure for education activities (e.g., workshops and tutorials) and research dissemination (publication) to be integrated and offered to the members of SCS and the scientific and professional communities at large.
The activities of the Education Technical Council are complementary with those of the Simulation Interoperability Standard Organization (SISO), and M&S Professional Certification Commission (M&SPCC). Various industries, government agencies, and universities in the United States are interested and active participants in promoting and advancing M&S education, research, and training. Some of these entities are listed below. Exciting, parallel and joint activities are taking place in universities, government agencies, organizations (e.g., SCS-Europe and SISO-Europe), and industries across Europe and elsewhere around the world.
In addition, SCS is engaged in promoting and offering new ways which can support M&S professionals in realizing their goals. In particular, SCS has begun a new initiative to complement its Journals and M&S Magazine with Multimedia and Textbook Series on Modeling & Simulation.
